Staying active as we age

Staying active in later life does not mean joining a gym. It means moving a little more often, in ways that feel enjoyable and safe.

Everyday movement counts

Hanging out washing, pottering in the garden, walking to the local shop, standing up during the adverts. These small movements add up. The aim is to sit for slightly less time each day, not to run marathons.

Balance is the priority

Falls are one of the biggest risks in later life. Simple balance exercises, done next to a sturdy chair, can make a real difference. Age UK Derby and Derbyshire runs excellent local classes.

Move with company

A short daily walk with a carer, neighbour or friend is often more sustainable than any formal routine. Movement plus conversation is a powerful combination.
