Tips for families supporting someone with dementia

Supporting someone you love through dementia asks a lot of you. There will be days full of laughter and days that feel heavy. Both are normal.

Meet them where they are

Trying to correct someone with dementia rarely helps and often causes distress. If your mum thinks it is 1974 and she needs to pick your brother up from school, sit with her in 1974 for a moment. Ask about the school. Ask what she made for tea. Meeting people in their reality is a kindness.

Simple, steady routines

A predictable rhythm to the day is deeply comforting. Same breakfast time, same chair, same music in the afternoon. Big changes and busy environments can be overwhelming.

Look after yourself too

You cannot pour from an empty jug. Accept help when it is offered. Speak to other families going through the same thing. Local Alzheimer's Society groups in Derbyshire are wonderful.
