Slow down and smile

A calm, unhurried voice and a warm smile tell someone they are safe long before any words register. This is often more important than what you actually say.

One thing at a time

Short sentences and one question at a time. Avoid open-ended questions when a simple choice would do. Would you like tea or coffee is easier than what would you like to drink.

It is okay to sit in silence

Not every visit needs a conversation. Holding a hand, watching the garden together, listening to a favourite record. Presence itself is communication.
